Statement on Opposing CPS Budget Cuts

Chicago students deserve stable, well-resourced neighborhood schools that give every child the opportunity to succeed.

Proposed CPS budget cuts that could increase class sizes and reduce school staffing would place additional strain on students, educators, and families who are already navigating significant challenges.

As someone who grew up in Humboldt Park and attended CPS schools, I understand how important strong public schools and supportive educators are for young people.

Students need classrooms where they can get individual attention and schools staffed with counselors, social workers, special education professionals, and trusted adults who help them feel supported both academically and personally.

At a time when many families are struggling with rising costs and ongoing uncertainty, we should be strengthening our public schools — not scaling back the resources students rely on every day. These decisions will have the greatest impact on working-class communities and neighborhoods that have historically been underinvested.

Chicago must continue investing in public education and ensuring every student, regardless of their background or zip code, has access to the resources and opportunities they deserve.
